Animatic Storyboard

Although we had created a picture storyboard we thought that creating an animatic storyboard as this would present our ideas in more detail. This storyboard will also help us when filming our final piece as we can refer back to our ideas making sure we are following them.

The animatic story board is created by filming pictures or images that had been drawn using sounded script over the top explaining what is happening. I drew that pictures that would be used. We then discussed all the elements that have to be spoken about to explain what is going to happen within the film.

Throughout this task there were some issues, not all the group decided on what we should include within the animatic, however we sat down as a group and talked through the issues that has risen as these were resolved quickly.

Here are some of the pictures that I drew that would be included in the animatic. I have annotated round the outside of the picture showing what type of shot will be used and at what angle, how long the shot will be, what is in the shot and what transitions will be used between each shot.

This first picture shows the opening scene, this is the crime scene in the woods. This establishing shot is an exterior shot. This will be about 10 seconds long as there will be a voice over of a news reader over the top.

The second picture shows Mark and Jane arguing. This shot incorporates both an over the shoulder shot looking over Mark’s shoulder and a close up of Jane’s face. In this shot we will use the 180 degree rule so the audience doesn’t get distracted and confused about where the couple are standing in the hallway.

The third picture shows shot 5 in the opening. This is an interior wide shot, it is showing the staff room with documents on the table. This will only be about 2 seconds long as it is only intended to be used so the audience can see the papers on the table. A cut will be used to link this shot with the next.

This picture is showing the 6th shot in the opening. This is an exterior low angle close up shown the man running through the leave in the wood. This shot will only show the feet of the man, as his identity is hidden throughout the film opening. This will also be a short shot of about 5 seconds.

This is the 9th shot in the opening sequence. This is an over the shoulder shot of the man looking through the bushes looking at the girl on the swing. This is set in the park. There will be a fade used between this shot and the next.

This shot is an over the shoulder close up. The close up is showing the head of the man, by using an over the shoulder shot we can see the man putting his hand on her shoulder but identity of the man is still hidden. This exterior shot will only be about 3 seconds long.

This is the last shot in the opening of our film. This mid shot shows the empty swing. The use of the empty swing leaves the audience thinking. A fade will then be used to show the end titles.

This is the completed animatic

Picture Storyboard

Our group decided that we wanted to develop our rough storyboard further. We decided as a group that we wanted to create a powerpoint presentation with some images that we have taken that outline the basic story and show all of the different shots that we want to take. We then explained the different shots and what will happen on each of these. This makes it clear to us when we come to film the actual film.

As a group we decided that we should develop our initial storyboard further. We decided that we would create our storyboard using PowerPoint using primary pictures that we have taken and annotating them explaining the basic storyline, the different shots and camera angles that will be used and the transactions. This will help the group when filming as it will be clear showing what we need to do.

Similar Media Works Presentation

As a group we has to complete a Similar Media Presentation to make sure that our film opening is effective as similar horror films that have already been created. We had to research all areas of a horror film including the generic conventions, symbols and techniques used to create the film. This would enable us to create a greater knowledge and understanding of the genre.

We decided that we should delegated slides for each of us has to create so we all had an equal amount of work to complete. Here I have uploaded the slides that I have created; this isn’t the finished presentation as my group have created other slides that will be added. This helped me as I was able to research horror and psychological horror films in detail. I looked at technical codes, generic symbols and techniques, camera angles and the Blair Witch Project completing a short Mise- en- scene. When creating our final film this research will help as I will know technical codes and symbols to use.

Similar Media Presentation

Using the information and research that I completed for the similar presentation I was able to apply this to the final film. Refer to the group blog for the final product.

The Shining Remakes

This is the remake that I helped edit along with Laura and Jenny.

As Abi felt like she didnt have much input with the first remake that we created she created her own. This isnt a bad thing as we are able to compare and contarst the different remakes, commenting and looking at the different transitions and titles used.

As a group we were given the task to remake a scene from a horror film. We were given the choice of three films that we could remake by our teacher. Before choosing a film, as a group we discussed what film would be best and how we would create each. We decided that we would create the hallway scene from the Shining. We chose this scene as it is simple but it also has many different camera angles and filming techniques. We wanted to test these different angles as they are common in many horror films. We would then be able to apply the different angles into our own horror opening that we will be creating, ensuring that it is as effective as possible following the generic horror film.

Recreating the scene also enabled the group to experiment with time management as this is important for the group to follow to make sure that all personal and group work is completed. Before filming we learnt about shot lists, in doing this we are able to use the information learnt and apply it to our final piece. Personally I think creating the remake was a really good idea, I was able to see what the group needs to improve on when creating our final piece and we also learnt how to overcome problems.

After filming we had to use the editing software to edit the film. I found this a very tedious task as the software was very temperamental and slow. From this I learnt that we need to organise our time better allowing more time for the editing to be completed. We also experimented using different transitions and titles, from this we could apply what we leant to our final piece.

Overall we learnt a lot from creating the remake. We gathered many ideas which we could use in our final piece. We leant about editing, filming techniques, generic horror elements and time management. This knowledge can be used in our final piece making it professional and effective.

Final Storyboard boards

In the meeting today the group and I discussed the Final Storyboards that we will be completing before producing the script and final film. Using a text book and a handout that our teacher gave us we looked at sampler storyboards. These storyboards showed us what detail we need to add to ours and what information we have to include. We decided that as a group we will complete two storyboards.

Creating two separate storyboards meant that extra detail would be added and we could show our use of using different media techniques. We would create the first story board using hand drawn pictures and annotations and the second using pictures that we have taken.

With the hand drawn storyboard each shot would be drawn on a separate A4 page annotating round the outside to show what shots would be used, how long the shot will be and the slide transitions. We decided to present this storyboard using video. In videoing the storyboard we would be able to explain and show what shots we will be using in person.

The second storyboard that we will complete will be on created on the computer. We will use pictures that we have taken ourselves and then annotate them on the computer. I think that creating two storyboards is a good idea as it shows our uses of different media. It will also be clearer for me and the group as it clearly shows what shots we will be using and where we could film them.

My input with creating these storyboards was to help take the pictures and to draw the pictures that would be used. Although this was a simple task it helped me understand what will be happening within the film. I understood and agreed with the shots what we will be using, as I think that they will make our storyline easy to follow and understand.

Researching similar media works and Horror re-make

At the last group meeting the group split up into two, this made it easier for the group to get work done more efficiently and quickly as we have out standing work that needs completing before the deadline. As a group we have to complete a presentation looking at similar media works, this includes researching different horror films, its elements and technical codes. Creating this presentation helps me and the group as we know exactly what we to include in our film. From collecting research we have a greater understanding about the conventions of horror films and who they address. I think that splitting into two groups really helped. We were able to get on with the work that had been assigned in the previous meeting, although we were in two groups I was still able to ask questions and for opinions if they were needed.
As well as the similar media works presentation that needs completing the group still needs to finish editing the Horror re-make film. In free periods I have been working on this. I feel that this is going well. I have had some trouble with the editing software, although this made it harder for me to work I overcame this problem by making sure I saved it regularly and I was patient. Included in the remake I have added extra sound and editing techniques such as transitions and headings and titles, this will make the over all quality of the film a lot higher.

Narrative scripts and rough story board

We managed to get all the work that needed to be completed. My group and I all sat down together and discussed the narrative of our film and what characters we are going to use. We talked about different shots that we would use and why we would use them. We also thought about the genre of film that we are going to create and what we want the audience to think and feel when watching the clip.

After deciding on a final narrative to our story we began to create a rough copy of the story board. I helped create this story board drawing half of the pictures. Completing this gave us a clear idea of what our film is going to look like when it is finished, what shots we aim to use when and why we are going to use them. Although the pictures that we had drawn were not clear it is only a rough copy showing our initial thoughts.

We all worked well, we shared out the tasks and discussed what everyone in the group wanted to include in the final product.

The Shining- Analysed Scene

Mise - En Scene: The Shining 1980

The Shining was released on the 23rd of May 1980 in USA. Directed by Stanley Kubrick this film shows a family which heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future. Of this film I will be analysing the scene ‘here’s Johnny’. This scene shows the father ‘Johnny’ cutting through the door to try and reach the girl that is locked inside the bathroom.

The first part of the clip is a wide shot this sets the scene. The darkness that surrounds the building gives makes it seem spooky. The only light in the scene comes from the lamps on the side of the building; this blue light doesn’t reveal much of the scene as much of the building is still in darkness. Although it is dark the audience can see that it has been snowing as snow drifts had building up alongside the building. The snow connotes coldness, this coldness makes you think that something bad is about to happen.

After the establishing shot the camera moves into the hotel where a man is seen standing outside a locked door. This shows the audience that the scene is set inside a realistic hotel. The male character is shown wearing a shirt and a jacket, because the man is still wearing his jacket it suggests that he shouldn’t be there. As he still has his jacket on it makes the audience think that he isn’t intending on staying long, he is only visiting. His scruffy messy hair and unshaven face implies that he is a hard rough character; it makes him seem evil and scary giving the character an un-easy feel. This man in the shot is in a mid-shot so it only shows him from his waist and above. The mid shot has been used so that the audience can only see the man from the waist upwards, this makes the audience speculate why he is there and what he is doing, making the viewers think that the character might have something to hide.

The light in the first part of the scene seems to be coming from the top left hand side, this light is realistic. The lights casts a shadow of the man on the back wall making the scene look darker than it really is. This reflects the characters dark mood, the unknowing of what he is about to do. Although the man shown on the landing isn’t facing the door to the bathroom his eyes are looking at the door. The angle of his body and his facial expressions make the audience think that he is waiting or he wants the person inside the room. This posture makes him feel very controlling, and makes the audience think that he isn’t very patient.

When the man begins his dialog the tone of his voice is low and husky, his script is very jokey but he says it in a very aggressive way making you think he is about to attack. There is no extra-diagetic sound in the clip, this makes the audience focus in on what the character is saying and adds tension.

After we see the man waiting outside we then she what is behind the locked door, a woman in a bathroom. She is shown in a mid shot. The audience can only see her from the waist and above and the shot doesn’t reveal much about the room that she is in, but from the small amount of detail that is given you can work out that she is a bathroom due to the white tiles and the window covered in condensation. All we can see in the shot is her and the window as the window is covered in condensation this makes the audience think that she has been locked in the room for quite some time. She is wearing a roll neck jumper and a jacket. As she is still wearing her jacket it makes the audience think that she also shouldn’t be there and she isn’t intending to stay. The woman looks petrified and worried as she can hear the man outside talking to her in an aggressive tone but she can’t see what he is about to do as well as the viewers. She has got pale make up on and darker eyes making viewers think that she is sick with worry, it also shows that she may having been crying.

As the camera pans down it is apparent that she is about to pick up a kitchen knife that is sitting on the sink. The camera then tracks round as she moves to the other side of the bathroom, showing her leaning on the wall holding the knife with both hands in front of her, this makes the audience think that is trying to protect herself. The lighting in the room is very bleak; we can see from the window that it is dark outside. This low light makes the audience feel uneasy, it doesn’t create any shadows making you think that she is alone and there is no one there to help her. In this part of the video there is extra- diagetic sound, this is created by strings being played at a very high pitch making it sound like screams. This creates tension and creates the feeling like something is going to happen.

The camera then goes back to the man the other side of the door. The camera is now behind the man, this wide shot shows the room that he is in and the axe that he is holding. This shot denotes that he is in the bedroom that is joined to the bathroom, due to the bed. The camera moves again to the right side of the man. The light in the room is created by a lamp on the left, this creates a soft affect. The juxtaposition between the soft lighting and the sharp edge of the axe makes the audience feel uneasy about what the man is about to do.

The man then starts hitting the door with the axe. The diagetic sound created by the axe hitting the door and the sound of the woman screaming are loud, this alarms the audience showing how violent he is being and how scared the woman is. There is still extra- diagetic sound in the background this also adds tension in the scene. While the man is hitting the door with the axe his facial expressions also show the audience how violent he is being and how much effort he is putting into hitting the door. The camera then goes back to the bathroom where the woman is, the camera shows the whole width of the room. It shows a close up of the axe as it comes through the door and a mid shot of the woman in the corner. At this point the women’s body language shows that she wants the man to stop. She shouts to the man telling him to stop and screams again. Her irritated, scared, panicked tone shows how terrified she is. Her hunched appearance and how she hides her face in the wall shows that she is scared, she is still holding the knife in front of her to try and protect herself.

The last part of the scene shows the man looking though the hole in the door, that he created by attacking the door with the axe. The close shot shows the damaged that he caused the door this shot looking through the hole shows the man standing in the bedroom. As he walks to the door and puts his face in the hole that he created, the audience then see the eagerness of him wanting to get in. He is bearing his teeth in anger like a snarling dog this shows the viewers how vicious he is. The high pitched extra-diagetic sound in the back ground makes the audience feel how brutal and sinister the man was being. At this point the light in the scene is coming through the door; this light was created by the lamp in the bed room. As the camera zooms out we can see that he is about to unlocks the door. The extra-diagetic sound is becoming louder and higher making the audience think that something is going to happen and adding even more stress to the situation. As the man unlocks the door the woman hits him with the knife, her anger had been focused on hurting him to make him go away. Fake blood had been used to show that an injury had taken place, although this was fake it makes the audience think and feel like then man had been hurt.

Researching Simular Media Works and Institute Logo

I began to create the logo and text for the institution which will be shown before the video. I did this on my own without my groups input as I had some spare time that I thought I should use constructively. I found the first step- designing the name the hardest. Although I thought about ideas that I could use, I didn’t think that these ideas suited what I wanted to create. After some time researching other institutes and collecting some ideas I came up with a suitable name that could be used. I then developed this idea and came up with a final name that I would use. I used Photo shop to create the logo and text. After I had created this I then showed my group, they said that this was very good. There were some comments that I will take into consideration as these were ways that I could improve on what I had created.

Possible Names
• Conspiracy Productions
• 1 Shot productions
• Fear no evil productions
• 3 elements production
Final Name- Element Productions

These are the two institute logos that I created using Photoshop. As these are only initial ideas I might have to change them when and if my group decide that we should.

My group and I also started to look at the presentation that we have to create which looks at Similar Media Works. To help us with our ideas we looked at a previous sampler presentation that had already been created. This helped a lot as I was able to see what information I had to include and under what headings. To also help I used the tick sheet that my teacher had prepared, I was able to refer back to this to make sure when discussing the presentation we were going to include all the information that we needed. We then talked about who would create each page, this helped as it means that everyone has input in the work and the work is shared evenly.

Moreover my group and I created and filled in a Gantt chart. This chart is going to help me and my group members with time. It will show what tasks need to be completed and when and who will complete them. This also went well as we all decided on the amount of time that we should spend and who will complete each task and when.

Preliminary Task

Preliminary Task AS Media Studies- Evaluation

1.
Continuity throughout a film or video is when the scene is kept the same, attention to detail is key in making the scene looks as realistic as possible. In our film we have demonstrated continuity correctly and incorrectly.

In the first part of the film continuity is inconsistent. We began the scene with the woman (Jenny) walking through the door, after, this shot changed to her sitting at the bar with a male friend (Laura). This jump from the woman walking through the door to sitting at the bar can be misleading to the audience because we missed out the woman walking from the door to the bar.

Apart from the misleading start of the film, we have demonstrated continuity well throughout the film till the end. We used the same actors in the film, these wore the same clothing. We also kept the scene the same meaning the back ground was kept the same and we kept the same camera level and angle.

2.
In the film we have used match on action editing techniques- shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. We used these two techniques to make our film easier for the audience to understand what is happening, it makes the audience feel like the action is continuous.
The 180° rule shows that the two characters in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two characters, it is called crossing the line.
Shot reverse shot is where one character is shown looking at another character and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character. Since the characters are filmed facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking and talking to each other.
Both these editing techniques were helpful when creating the film. It makes the film look realistic and it also makes it easier to follow the script and the action within the scene. The shot reverse shot allows the audience to focus in on detail, and the 180° rule keeps the scene consistent.

3.
I feel that my group worked together well. Before we started to film we shared our ideas and thoughts about the task, we then decided as a group how we should approach the task. We discussed problems that we came across and got over these quickly because we listened to each other and considered each other’s ideas.

4.
If I was to film this again I would make sure that all the shot angles were correct. This would prevent people and objects being in the shot when they shouldn’t be there. I would pay more attention to detail and the acting in the scene to make it look more professional and realistic.

5.
I think that we planned the video well. Before we began filming each person created a story board, this presented our ideas on the shots that we were going to be using. Once each of use created a story board we discussed as a group what we were going to be doing, how we were going to do it, where and who will be in the film.

6.
Throughout our film we did use transitions and title pages and credits. We used them to make our film look professional. We used a fade transition between the title page and the start of the film and between the last part of the film and credits. Use used a title page and credits at the end of the film. This showed the audience what the film is called and who was in the film.

7.
As this was the first time I had used Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 it was completely new to me. After using the editing software a couple of times I had learned the basics. I was able to complete editing the film as I had learnt to use the program. The whole process from uploading the video clips into the program, to cutting out the bits that we didn’t need, to exporting the finished video was frustrating at times but after I got the hang of using the program I was able to finish the task.

8.
I have learnt that technologies don’t always work for you. You have to be patient and make sure you save everything twice, just in case something happens to the original file. Before using the software or products you should make sure they work so you don’t have to go back to do the same thing twice. It is easier to know how to work the technology so you can use it to the best of your ability. Although using Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 was new, learning how to use it myself did have some advantages. I was able to solve problems myself meaning when I used the software again I could avoid the problem before it occurred.

Script, Initial Ideas Brainstorm

This was the first part of the project. I had to think of possible ideas that we could base an opening film on. Me and my group sat and thought about possible ideas that we could use. Personally I thought that this went really well. When we first began to discuss our ideas I found it really hard to think of a story line that we could us. As we discussed each other’s ideas and developed the ideas we were able to create an initial story line. As a group we thought about the initial idea, but I found it easier to think about what filming techniques and elements that we could use within the film.

Although at this stage of creating the script the ideas that we are thinking about aren’t definite and this is only the first part of creating our products, I wanted to make sure that the ideas that we were thinking of using were going to look professional and well produced. I focussed on thinking about ideas for a psychological horror; I thought that this would be an easier idea to follow due to the editing programs and the props we have.

Elements that I thought we could use included using colour to indicate the antagonist and protagonist within the film. I thought that this was a good idea as it isn’t obvious to the viewer and it would make them think. Using a monolog would also be another good idea as the audience wouldn’t actually see the killer making them think themselves.

Nightmare on Elm Street- Opening scene

Mise – En Scene: Nightmare on Elm Street 1984

A Nightmare on Elm Street is a 1984 American horror film directed and written by Wes Craven. The film is set in the fictional Midwestern town of Springwood, Ohio. The plot revolves around several teenagers, Nancy Thompson and a group of her friends being terrorized and tormented in their nightmares by a clawed serial child murderer named Fred Krueger.

The opening part of the scene follows the typical generic conventions of a horror film. It the first two minutes of the scene we see both the protagonist and the antagonist this is what we expect from a horror film. There are also common elements that the audience associates with a horror, the feeling of danger, a victim being threatened and the use of a dangerous weapon. Although in this part of the opening scene we don’t see the event where the protagonist gets hurt, there is a sense that an event is going to happen which includes the character. The meaning of the opening part of the film is transmitted from the institution to the audience making this film an active institution. The audience is passive meaning that the audience itself creates the meaning of the scene. They are able to create this opinion from watching previous horror films and common elements that are used in the film.

The start of the film starts with the advertisement from the production company that produced the film- the institute. This stands out as the text is in red and it is set on a black background. This connotes to the audience that the film is going to have blood in it as red represents the colour of blood. This opening part of the scene is completely silent; this adds tension and draws people in to what is about to happen. It creates a sense of the unknown.

The scene begins with the camera panning around the room until it reaches the man’s feet which have just entered the room. This close up shot of Fred Krueger’s feet only shows what shoes he is wearing, what he is standing on and what is around him on the floor. The shoes that Fred are wearing look old and worn these tie in with the surroundings of the room as it is dark and untidy. The use or costume that Fred is wearing immediately make the audience think that he is the antagonist that is used throughout the film. This costume suggests that he doesn’t look after himself and that he is often in the room. At this point it is unknown to the audience where he is. This gives the audience a sense of uneasiness as they don’t know what is about to happen or what Fred is about to do.

Throughout this first part of the clip extra- diagetic sound and diagetic sound has been used. Although it is very quiet it does have an impact on the viewer. The extra- diagetic sound used sounds very distant, it almost sounds like a working factory from all the machinery hissing and moving. Although the audience can only see Fred’s feet the sound used allows the audience the picture where he is. The diagetic sound used is very powerful, all the viewer can hear is Fred’s heaving breathing, this makes the audience feel uneasy, panicked and almost that he is in a hurry as the audience still can’t see his face and expressions.

Fred then bends down and with his left hand he picks up the paper bag that is lying beside his feet. This is the first time the audience see Fred’s hands. The camera pans down and shows the paper bag next to his feet using a close up shot. From the diagetic sounds used the audience is aware that it is a paper bag due to the rustles of the paper. As the bag is closed the viewers don’t know what is in the bag making the audience suspicious of what he is going to do with the bag and what is in it. He then takes the bag from the floor to the table and empties its contents. A high shot and close up is used to show the items on the table and the man’s hands as he empties the contents of the paper bag onto the table, this reveals to the audience that the bag is full of knifes and other dangerous objects. These objects all relate to murder and pain due to the sharp edges of the knives and the dirtiness of the items making the audience feel scared and venerable. The high shot used to show what is on the table make the audience think that Fred is powerful; he is looking down at the objects making the audience think that he can do what he likes. The lighting used at this point is reflecting off the knife that he is about to pick up, this makes the knife stand out in the scene perhaps making the audience feel like it is important and powerful. Fred then searches through the contents until he decides to pick up the knife and what looks like a metal pipe or tube. At this point you can see Fred’s hands; this makes the scene more bizarre as Fred’s identification is still unknown to the audience. Fred’s hands and finger nails are covered in dirt suggesting to the audience that his hands fit in with the surroundings which suggests that he lives there and he often looks through bags if knifes. He then carries the two objects that he has just picked up to a table. On this table is a leather glove. Using tools and the items that he has collected he starts to craft a clawed glove using different tools and machinery. The shots used to show the audience how he is making the glove still don’t reveal anything apart from Fred’s hands, the tools he is using to make the glove and the materials he is using as they are all close ups. This puts the audience on edge as they still don’t know what is about to happen and what he is capable of doing.

Through of the second part of the scene, where Fred is constructing the clawed glow the sound used if very important. Diagetic sound is used to describe the tools that he is using this sound is very loud; the diagetic sounds describe the banging of a hammer and scraping of a file etc. There is now more extra- diagetic sound in the scene- this music is very mysterious still making the audience wonder what is about to happen and what Fred is going to do with the glove. The high pitched sound gradually gets louder as the glove is being made indicting that he is becoming more dangerous. As the extra- diagetic sound gets louder it blocks out the sound of the factory and Fred’s breathing. This makes the audience focus more on what he is doing with the glove. After Fred has completed making the clawed glove he puts it on. Although the camera zooms out the shot is still a close up, it shows his hand opened up and the full extent of the claws.

Throughout the first scene the lighting used is very dark, this makes the scene more mysterious and scary. Although the scene is very dark it is also red causing the audience a feeling of unease and suspicion. Fred is wearing a red jumper; throughout the scene this is visible. This redness denotes blood, gore and pain making the audience aware that he is going to do something with the clawed glove that he has just created. Although there is lighting used it doesn’t create many shadows this is because the shots used are only close ups not allowing much room for a shadow to be made. It is hard to observe where the light is coming from as all parts of the shot have been lit.

The title then appears, this is like the production advertisement. The Background is black and ‘The Nightmare’ – the title of the film is in red. This makes it stand out making it easy for the audience to see as it is in red it connotes the thought of blood and violence. The part of the title which say ‘on elm street’- this is in white making it stand out even more. The extra- diagetic sound used at this point is very loud, it makes the audience stunned and involved and they want to know what is going to happen next.

The shot then changes and shows the claws piercing a curtain. This close up shows the claws as they cut through the material and the damage it has caused. This is used to provoke the audience think that an event is going to happen. I think this shot has been used to show the audience how hazardous and sharp the claws really are and what they are capable of doing. The diagetic sound used in this shot is very loud. It sounds like a scream which has been created by Fred as he attacked the curtain this loud scream creates a tense atmosphere for the audience. This scream shows the audience how much effort he has put into cutting through the material. The change from the extra- diagetic to the loud scream of the diagetic music puts the audience on edge and makes them feel venerable. The light used in this shot creates a shadow. This shadow shows Fred’s arm with the claw glove. The shadow created from the light makes his arm and the claw seem bigger than it really is making the audience feel threatened.

After the shot showing the claws in the curtain it changes to a close up of a girl- Tina standing in what looks like her nighty. Her facial expressions and the way that she is looking around connote to the audience that she is dazed and confused and she doesn’t know where she is, like she is in a dream making the audience think that she is the protagonist due to the innocence that she is displaying in her body language and expressions. The light used in the scene is very bright making it almost white. The white light is lighting up the whole shot and we can only see the girl. This light used makes the audience feel that she is somewhere she shouldn’t be, it gives a sense of the unknown as the viewers can’t see what is around her, and the whiteness of the light connotes her innocence. The shot then changes to an extreme close up of her face. This close up shows her eyes, she looks like she is a trance as her eyes are fixed on something, her eyes convey her feelings to the audience using an eye line match with the camera.

A wide shot then shows where she is. The shot shows Tina in her night dress at the end of an ominous alleyway which is filled with steam, shadows and dripping water this set is very powerful, and leads the viewer into believing something sinister is going to happen. Tina is still looking around; her expressions and body language indicate that she is still unaware of where she is and what she is doing there. He arms are moving around almost if she is feeling for something that isn’t there, this makes the audience feel scared as she is opening herself up, she isn’t protected. She begins to run forwards, she is looking round for somewhere to go or for someone to help. She runs forward until she is now in a mid shot. This shot still shows the alleyway that she has just run down and Tina from the waist upwards. The camera again changes to a close up of her face, this close up shows the audience how important Tina is in the scene. The shot then changes to the mid shot. Tina then turns around, she turns slowly, her body language convey that she is vary about what is behind her. After the girl turns round an over the shoulder shot had been created, as the audience can still see down the alleyway and the back of her head as she is static. This over the shoulder shot allows the audience to see and feel what the female character is feeling. It puts the audience in her situation and creates a panicked atmosphere as the audience don’t know what is going to happen.

Throughout this part of the scene where the girl is showed extra- diagetic sound is used. The mysterious music puts the audience on edge and connotes that she is in a dream. It gradually gets quicker as she begins to run down the alleyway, showing her panic towards the situation she is in.
